Mindfulness is not a technique that you just bring out and use in emergencies when you need it. It’s a way of living, just like keeping physically fit. You can’t just want to be fit when you need to run for the train, you need to be cultivating fitness all the time, and then you can run for the train when you need to. Mindfulness is the same; as you develop the mental muscles (actually, it’s new neural pathways in your brain), then when troubling thoughts arise you’re better able to relate differently to them and to step off them. So, you need to practice mindfulness regularly if you want it to help you become more resilient and live a richer more rewarding life.
