One of the most surprising research results to come out in the past few years points out how important SILENCE is in our lives. Experiments have shown that being silent for a time actually does wondrous things for both our mind and body.
Silence is a rare commodity for most of us. The sounds of life once included just those of nature and people talking. Now they include traffic, machinery, gadgets, TV, radio and computer media broadcasts. Yes, this noise is now seen as ‘just normal’, but to our mind and body it can become a source of constant background stress.
One study, by Gary W. Evans, a professor of human ecology at Cornell University, notes that children who are exposed to noise develop a stress response that allows them to ignore the noise.
“This study is among the strongest, probably the most definitive proof that noise – even at levels that do not produce any hearing damage – causes stress and is harmful to humans,”
Periods of silence however, seem to reduce our stress levels and help enhance the regeneration of our brain. This consequently promotes better brain function which leads to improved health and well-being.

Science Says Silence Is Much More Important To Our Brains Than We Think
In 2011, the Finish Tourist Board ran a campaign that used silence as a marketing ‘product’. They sort to entice people to visit Finland and experience the beauty of this silent land. They released a series of photographs of single figures in the nature and used the slogan “Silence, Please”.
