I would recommend this course

“I would recommend this course to learn how to be calmer and be reminded of the power of kindness to yourself as well as others.

Before, I felt constantly swayed from one thing to another with little sense of what I was doing, or noticing what I might enjoy. After the 8 weeks I knew there was a way of approaching daily life that can increase the joy of it (with practice). I need more practice to make a real difference but think I actively seek out things to look at or listen to, and attend to them more fully while they are there.

I enjoyed the ‘sanctuary’ of the classes. Thank you for running it. I am very lucky to have benefitted from this.”

There was nothing about the class that I didn’t like

“I found the course so useful & really enjoyed it. I found myself really looking forward to our class each week to learn a few more tips on teaching me to slow down, relax & take time for me.

There was nothing about the class that I didn't like. Maybe the only thing I might have changed was making it a little longer as it went very quickly.

I had no idea what Mindfulness was, but now think everyone needs to experience it & they should teach it in schools. .Just imagine if all young people could learn Mindfulness, how much happier they would be and what a better, more caring world we would live in.

I think I surprised myself at how little time I take for myself & how much around me I take for granted, & all the beautiful things I didn't notice.

I found Joy a great teacher, she was very easy to talk to & we all worked together sharing experiences which was great as I didn't realise how many people are just like me. There are so many people so busy with life they don't actually enjoy their journey through life.

I definitely feel I have changed since learning just a little about mindfulness. I now slow down & take things in around me a lot more. I have started to stop worrying if I don't get things done that will wait. The main thing is I am being a lot kinder to myself!!

I know lots of people that I think Mindfulness would help, although I'm not sure they would believe it can help as so many people have closed minds about these things. I have started talking to people about being Mindful & am trying to help friends who seem very negative, to try & enjoy life & be kind to themselves & others.

Thank you Joy so much for spending time with us, I really enjoyed it & would be very interested in learning more about Mindfulness.”

John’s gentle, open and practical teaching style made me feel very much at ease and put my nerves to rest

“I had no experience of mindfulness or meditation and had been suffering with anxiety for a couple of years. I was slightly apprehensive about whether I would be able to sit still for about an hour and think about stuff, or not think about stuff. But John’s gentle, open and practical teaching style made me feel very much at ease and put my nerves to rest.

From the first week of the course onwards I have found that it has gifted me with the ability to actually be calm without having to in some way inebriate or exhaust myself; firstly with the Body scan which I looked forward to doing each day, and especially the mindfulness of breath.

Progressively each week I found that I was enjoying using the insights that I was taught. The mindfulness of breath is something that I now use every day. I have learned to recognise when anxious feelings arise that I can let them go and that being aware of my breathing helps massively.

As I continued to practice over the weeks I found that having the opportunity each week to discuss the weeks experiences of meditation with John very helpful. As a teacher myself I know that listening is a really important part of being an effective teacher; John clearly listened to me and his insights into my experiences were very illuminating and helpful.

I have missed the class since it finished, and am hoping that John will run some more soon that I can go to!”

It has made me less critical of myself and more accepting of times when things are not going well

"I would recommend this course because it makes you think about your own reactions to the life’s problems, particularly putting minor things into perspective.

I was aware that I was finding life stressful and sometimes concerned about the effect on me. I had hoped, having recently retired, that this situation would have improved. It has made me less critical of myself and more accepting of times when things are not going well. I now try to focus on being kinder to myself and be more aware of the good things and people around me.

The sessions themselves were relaxing and empowering. I was largely able to forget about the outside world.

The atmosphere within the group was right and so much of that is down to Joy, John and their canine sidekick. It was okay to say just what you felt/experienced, everyone listened, no-one sought to dominate. It was essentially collaborative, absolutely not competitive."

You can learn to understand yourself and your reactions better, to become calmer and more in control

"I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested in learning more about themselves and their minds, in particular to people who are under stress and get easily overwhelmed because you can learn to understand yourself and your reactions better, to become calmer and more in control even in busy or difficult situations and to approach them (and yourself) more non-judgmentally and kindly.

I was definitely surprised how much I was able and keen to take from the sessions and use and practice in my day-to-day life. I was expecting the course to be very interesting but I think I did not expect it to be quite so engaging and I am surprised the materials from the sessions did not just end up buried and forgotten somewhere in a drawer - I have actually been reading and working through them.

I think that if I manage to keep practicing some of what we learned regularly, it will certainly help me stay ‘in touch’ with myself and my values, which should ultimately lead to more happiness and hopefully health as well.

I would just like to reiterate how enjoyable and thought-provoking an experience it was for me and thank you for offering and delivering the course to us so well!"

I enjoyed being able to ask questions, share experiences and not feel judged

“The only thing I didn’t enjoy about the classes was finishing them. I enjoyed being able to ask questions, share experiences and not feel judged. Also importantly, the time spent explaining the concepts rather than diving straight into practice. I’ve learned actually how to meditate and what this means. The teacher was great – balanced structure well with interactivity and let it flow. A sensitive addition of humour too.

I’m surprised How much easier it has got naturally and what a huge impact mindfulness has had already in helping me address issues that I have tried through various therapies and other techniques for over a year.

The variety of techniques was great. Since practising I feel that I’m, happier, kinder, more patient, chilled out, be able to reframe and not get caught up in negative thoughts. I’ve learned patience, to switch off and think of today, to be happier and how to get back to sleep!

Thank you Joy, I have been amazed at my progress. Especially this last week - what would have previously been a very overwhelming time for me resulting in high levels of stress and anxiety actually ended up with me not only getting through it but making really positive progress at work with tangible results and dare I say it, I actually enjoyed it also!!”

At the end of the course I think I am handling things a bit better

"I would recommend this course to anyone who gets depressed because it does offer you a variety of coping strategies and it does put an element of joy into the everyday regardless of the bad stuff that may be going on.

I really enjoyed being part of the group - the pleasure of all that work going on so intensely and with such good humour and generosity.

Before, I was feeling very stressed about a particular issue, over which I've not real control. And felt that I was losing touch with the creative bit of myself. At the end of the course I think I am handling things a bit better and beat myself up less for not being massively successful in every single thing I do. I don't assume a difficult time is all down to THE WAY I AM rather than a whole lot of factors. It’s now easier to shift myself out of the really grim mode.

Thanks for everything"

It’s surprised me how dramatically my attitude towards things was altered for the better

“I would recommend this course to anyone who is finding that life seems like a chain of events that has to be dealt with and managed; anyone losing sight of direction or meaning in their lives, or simply anyone who wants to make some new friends with whom to consider experiences of life meaningfully and with a sense of humour!

Before the course I had recently experienced some big changes in my life, and was struggling to deal with things as they came. Instead I got tangled up scheduling a hectic work life which left little time for me to be at peace with my own thoughts. The future in its mundane details seemed to comprise all of my experience. This meant I was struggling to identify with both simple positive feelings as they arose and also crucial and complex feelings of grief.

After the 8 weeks I found that I could now look to a selection of different mindful approaches to practical and emotional obstacles which enabled me to cope with trying situations. I ended up appreciating the world around me and that I could 'work with it' as opposed to against it; planning became less consuming and the details that could trigger anxiety troubled me less. I think this was because the course offered a gestalt, neutralising perspective on life and encouraged us to revel in experience and see things simply as they are, instead of categorise and scrutinise.

I have certainly noticed that my self-awareness has increased such that I am much more likely to be able to recognise when my mind is behaving badly. This could be negative thought patterns or anxious planning, or anything else that is detrimental to my wellbeing. In doing so I am able to see the situation for what it is (usually unimportant) and relax, and cope more productively.

It’s surprised me how dramatically my attitude towards things was altered for the better if I maintained a steady practice regime. And therefore how quickly one ‘falls out of mindfulness’, if practice is neglected.

I found it valuable being able to employ mindfulness in short bursts to manage high stress situations, and talking about mindfulness in a down to earth way. I enjoyed the course and its accessibility, flexibility, and the opportunity to discuss.”

“I knew very little about Mindfulness and was not sure what to expect. I now feel that I understand a little more and have found the course really interesting, I’ve been introduced to new ideas and concepts that I think will help me cope better in the future.

I would recommend this course to anyone with an enquiring, open mind who would like to find strategies to cope better with stresses and worries.

I’ve enjoyed Meeting lovely folk and thinking new thoughts every week. I also found it valuable to learn that there’s no need to feel guilty about being kind to yourself!”

“I didn't know what to expect but felt certain that learning to meditate could only be a good thing. I was interested to see what effect it would have on my tendency to be over-reflective.

At the end of the course I find I am able to interrupt negative thoughts, which if not interrupted will lead to negative emotion. I am learning to recognise and interrupt an automatic negative reaction and replace it with a response which has been consciously chosen by me.

I would recommend this course to people who are aware they react automatically to situations and are not happy about it because the course will teach you how to interrupt these reactions and replace them with mindfully chosen responses.

I’ve noticed that Every time I interrupt negative thought patterns I feel the benefit. Also, the coping breathing space is proving a useful tool in stressful situations.

I was surprised how quickly the sessions passed! At the outset two and a half hours sounded a long time, but it never felt a long time.”

(8-Week Mindfulness for Health & Happiness Course)

"I enjoyed all aspects of the course! The interesting and thought-provoking material, having the opportunity and time to practice the exercises in a way that was stimulating and not rushed, the interesting discussions everyone had throughout the course, as well as most of the ‘home experiments’ and exercises.

I was doing a lot of everyday activities automatically and in a hurry. By the end of the course I feel a bit more able to be aware of and to focus on what I am doing and what is happening around me, I find my everyday experiences richer. I feel more present and my days are no longer flying by without me noticing.

One definite impact I have noticed in terms of health is that the mindful attitude to eating, which I have learned to adopt, has helped me to improve my diet considerably. I also feel ‘happier’ in a sense that I am calmer, kinder to myself and more appreciative and capable of noticing and enjoying simple things, as well as the people around me.

It has been a valuable opportunity to learn more about myself and to get in touch with/be more aware of what is happening within and around me. I found it very useful to think about my values and how much what I do is (or isn’t) in line with them. I have also very much liked the parts about mindful acceptance and thoughts not being facts, which is helping me cope with difficult feelings and thoughts.

I think John, Joy and Loradog made a great team! The course was extremely well organised, I was really impressed by their time keeping and the amount they were able to cover in the sessions so thoroughly. They seemed to have worked very well together, it was well balanced, entertaining as well as educational. I also really liked the positive, friendly and personal atmosphere they managed to create and maintain throughout the sessions."

"This course is great for Busy people who need to slow down! Also people who are interested in learning and developing their personal and communication skills.

Before the course I found my head was constantly spinning with the things I had to do. By the end I noticed that my mind was much calmer and I was taking things more in my stride. I would recommend this course to busy, frantic people, because it’s a great way of learning how to understand and slow down your mind.

I enjoyed the general learning, the facilitators and interacting with the other delegates. Apart from learning to slow down, another surprising benefit is that it’s improved my posture!"

(8-Week Mindfulness for Health & Happiness Course)

“I would recommend this course to anyone who is ready to look at themselves with an open mind. The approach is gentle, kind-hearted and non-dogmatic. You’re not being asked to believe anything –just to try it and see for yourself what it can do. It’s not self-centred – I’d say it encourages an attitude that’s kind to others as well as to yourself.

I’d had some previous experience of meditation and could recognise its value. This was the first time I’d done a structured course. Doing this, with the gentle self-discipline it encouraged, I was able to really experience the benefits of the Mindfulness approach, as well as acknowledge them intellectually. Before I started I had a few unhelpful tendencies – like getting irritated about my own and others’ shortcomings and getting overwhelmed with things I had to do (while not getting on and doing them).

At the end of the course I still have these tendencies, but (at least most of the time) I quickly notice them for what they are, recognising that I have a choice about how to react to whatever situation I find myself in. I generally feel I know myself better and am more in control of my life. I’m also better able to appreciate what’s around me in the present moment (including other people) - and more inclined to smile.

I liked that it was fairly challenging but with a discipline that resisted harshness. There was a kindness and good humour to it all.

I recognised too that this isn’t a once and for all fix. The benefits can dwindle if the practice is neglected.”

(8-Week Mindfulness for Health & Happiness Course)

“I would recommend mindfulness to anyone, whether life is difficult or easy as I think it would benefit everyone.

I don't think I had any major problems in my life as I felt fine most of the time. I have a busy life, as a lot of people do. Working full time and having a family can be stressful at times.

I felt as though I was coping, although at times I did get anxious and a bit overwhelmed with all the day to day problems that can arise - just normal stuff!

At the end of the course I still have the same work and the same family with all the same stress, but now when a situation arises that I have to deal with, I find that I am looking at it in a different way.
I don't panic as much and I am calmer in difficult situations. I also don't dwell on things so much, I can clear things from my mind.

I love the week we did about letting things go. I tend to go over things again and again, but this has taught me to stop dwelling on things and let them go.”

(8-Week Mindfulness for Health & Happiness Course)

“I would recommend this course to anyone who, like most of us, has felt that she/he is constantly thinking about the future rather than living now, because thinking about what others expect you to do is often much worse than actually tackling things in a mindful way.

Before the course I felt at times that I was drowning in a sea of things that I had to do, I worried about what people would think of me if I didn't deal with everything, and deal with it well.

By the end of the course I realised that I was calm enough to deal with immediate issues and that nothing terrible would happen if I prioritised things and related these priorities to my own values.

I have fewer panicky moments and feel able to slow my mind rather than imagine the worst possible scenarios. I already feel calmer (mostly) and have found effective ways of focussing on what I value.

The different meditations have been invaluable, also the realisation that thoughts are not facts.
I really enjoyed getting to know some lovely, interesting people, sharing thoughts and feelings with honesty and sensitivity.

The way in which John and Joy responded to each comment, question etc showed insight and demonstrated their knowledge and skills around
mindfulness and meditation. We were all gently encouraged to interact which led to a much better understanding of other people's thoughts and experiences.

All of the team made us feel welcome at each session -although we are glad that John and Joy didn't mirror Lora whose attentions usually included nuzzles, sniffs and lying on her back wanting her belly rubbed!

Thank you both for all the time and effort that you have put into this fantastic course.”
